Development partner
In recent years BIRN have become a strong development partner and supplier of both machined and unmachined cast iron, particularly for the automotive industry. In the start-up phase BIRN will work closely with the customer on the final design of solutions to satisfy all his expectations with regard to quality and functionality.
Tools such as FMEA and Team Feasibility are used to design and manufacture optimum production equipment, the objective being “right first time”.
|
CAD/CAM
Patternmaking, machining and assembly equipment are made exclusively using CAD/CAM documentation, produced internally. Where appropriate, this is based on the customer’s own CAD geometry.
At BIRN we use the following CAD/CAM systems:
- CATIA
- Pro/Engineer
- PowerSHAPE (Delcam)
- PowerMILL (Delcam)
- Mastercam
|
Exchange of electronic documentation
Electronic documentation can be exchanged using EDI (ENGDAT, ODETTE, email) in all common standard formats.
|
Advanced strength calculation (FEM analysis)
BIRN have established cooperation with FEM calculation specialists. The strength properties of the part are analysed in close collaboration with selected subcontractors. The part design being optimised with regard to choice of material, dimensions and weight.
|
Production equipment
Patternmaking, machining and assembly equipment are made in BIRN’s own pattern shop and tool department or alternatively, in collaboration with leading external subcontract pattern manufacturers.
|
|
Production equipment is made with quality, durability and operator ergonomics in mind.
|
Sample castings
The first parts are cast and machined under the same conditions as for normal full production. This ensures that sample castings are identical in every way to parts made in continuous production. The sample castings are measured in a metrology lab and a survey report is produced. Advanced 3D-coordinate measuring machines are used for this purpose.
|
Solidification simulation
MAGMASOFT is used to simulate solidification as part of the optimisation process for design, gating, feeding and pattern layout.
|
Constant improvements – method and quality
BIRN are constantly working on method and quality improvements with a view to ensuring that production continues to be efficient and environmentally friendly.
